Puma Bitumen appoints Dr Erik Denneman as Australian and MEAP Technical Manager

27th March 2018Puma Bitumen, part of Puma Energy, the globally integrated midstream and downstream energy company, has appointed Dr Erik Denneman, as its Technical Manager - Middle East and Asia Pacific. Denneman, a leading expert within the global asphalt and bitumen industry, will be based in Altona, Melbourne, at Puma Bitumen’s Global Technology Centre for R&D.

Denneman joins Puma Bitumen from AAPA (Australian Asphalt Pavement Association), where he was Director of Technology and Leadership, and will be responsible for driving Puma Bitumen’s commitment to new product development and innovation, rigorous quality management and delivering world-class, industry-leading bitumen products and services.

Utilising its global supply, logistics and technical capabilities, Puma Bitumen sources high quality bitumen, as well as manufacturing and supplying a full range of bituminous products across the world, from standard and hard paving grades, to polymer modified binders and other speciality grades.

Starting immediately, Denneman will be drawing upon his longstanding experience of transferring new technologies between different countries and jurisdictions, enabling the faster adoption of new bitumen products across the world. Denneman will be collaborating closely with suppliers, producers, industry associations, road agencies and construction companies to achieve this.

Denneman will also be responsible for driving sustainability across the sector. In previous roles, he has been instrumental in leading the introduction of crumb rubber from waste tyres as an elastomer in bitumen. He has also played a key role in transferring high modulus asphalt technology to South Africa and Australia, which leads to thinner, more sustainable roads.

Commenting on his appointment, Dr Erik Denneman said: “By producing higher performance innovative solutions, we can look towards introducing thinner, more durable roads, that are also more cost effective for the industry. I’m excited to be joining an established global team of technical experts who, like me, are focussed on applying these kinds of solutions to industry challenges.

"Based at Melbourne’s renowned technical centre, I’ll be at the very hub of an impressive global technical network, which puts innovation at the heart of every process. This spans from a highly expert product sourcing programme, and ultra-efficient manufacturing process using world-class, state-of-the-art terminals, to impressively slick transportation and delivery."

Denneman comes to Puma Bitumen with a broad international experience, having previously worked as an Engineer in the Netherlands, South Africa, the USA and Australia. He has a track record of successful introduction of innovative products and processes to the flexible pavement industry. He is an expert in performance-based design and specification of bituminous materials and the development of advanced pavement and road design models for these materials.

“We are very pleased to welcome Dr Erik Denneman to the Puma Bitumen team and value his longstanding experience in the industry. Erik’s leading technical expertise will be an invaluable addition to our business and his appointment goes a long way towards elevating Puma Bitumen as the technical leader in the industry. His experience and knowledge are ideal for providing the best possible support for our valued customers, leading product development and innovation and working collaboratively with government and road authorities to drive the industry forward,” said Neal Lewis, Global Bitumen Trading Operations & Technical Manager, Puma Energy.
